Book of Type Project
Spring semester 2019
For this assignment, I was given the task to design a small fold-out book introducing a particular font. The book is 16 pages long, including front and back covers, and I choose a font called Amiri from Google Fonts. I started by searching about it online and found that it doesn’t have much information. One of the hardest parts to me was the color choices because we were allowed to use only two colors besides white (white considered as the original color of the paper itself). It was important for me to make good use of the white space as well. I chose black and gold because Amiri is a font that is being used widely in Arabic, and I thought that gold represents rich/wealth. This is what inspired me to include Arabic letters later in the design since Amiri itself has very little information. I paid a lot of attention in making both left and right sides of the book consistent such as to assign the same color of the background to them or made a small design that extended from left to right, so they have some sort of connection.
Another challenge was the assembly part. The pages are being printed by two pages connected. Except for the front and back covers needed to be separated by cutting them out, the rest of the pages needed to be folded. Since some of them have the same color as the background, it was hard to distinguish where the fold was between the two pages. Before I cut them out, I use the ruler to mark the fold in the white space outside of the design, and carefully folded it so I wouldn’t mess up the pages. Also, the cutting must be very careful so that all the pages can have the same or similar height when I glued them together as a book. I was lucky to be one of the few students who did not need to go through the assembly process again. By doing this assignment, I learned that research was important when creating a design that has to do with providing information to the viewers and that all pages must be consistent, so it allows the viewer to follow easily.
